Marine NDT Testing Services
Magnetic Particle Testing and Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging

Headway Marine provides and coordinates non-destructive testing (NDT) services for ships, marine equipment, cargo-handling machinery and steel structures. Our testing services help identify surface defects, material deterioration and loss of steel thickness without damaging the component being examined.

We support shipowners, technical managers, charterers, ship agents, insurers, repair contractors and marine operators throughout Melbourne and other Australian ports.

Magnetic Particle Testing

Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT or MPI) is used to detect surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as carbon steel and low-alloy steel.

The testing process magnetises the component and applies magnetic particles to the inspection area. Where a crack or discontinuity interrupts the magnetic field, the particles form a visible indication for assessment.

Magnetic particle testing may be suitable for:

Welds and heat-affected zones
Crane hooks, lifting points and pad eyes
Deck machinery and structural connections
Shafts, pins, gears and other machinery components
Steel plates, brackets and foundations
Suspected fatigue cracks
Components following repairs or welding

Testing areas are prepared as required, examined and documented with photographs and recorded findings.

Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging

Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging (UTG) measures the remaining thickness of steel and other suitable materials using ultrasonic equipment. Testing can generally be performed from one accessible side of the component.

Thickness gauging assists in identifying corrosion, erosion and localised material loss.

Typical marine applications include:

Ship hull plating
Deck and superstructure plating
Ballast, freshwater and fuel tanks
Cargo holds and hatch covers
Pipes and piping systems
Sea chests and overboard lines
Pressure vessels and storage tanks
Crane structures and machinery foundations
Steel pontoons, barges and marine structures

Measurements can be taken at nominated locations or across a planned measurement grid. Results are recorded against the relevant component or test location to provide a clear indication of the remaining material thickness.
